Do insulin pens need to be refrigerated?

2025-08-26

Latest company news about Do insulin pens need to be refrigerated?

Unopened insulin pens can be stored in your fridge until their expiration date. Unlike vials, insulin pens shouldn't be refrigerated once opened. Most manufacturers recommend keeping your pen outside the fridge and at room temperature once you start using it.

Before Use: Refrigeration is Required

  • Unopened insulin pens should be stored in the refrigerator:

    • Temperature: 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F)

    • Do not freeze. Frozen insulin must be discarded.

    • Keep away from direct sunlight or heat sources.

After First Use: Room Temperature is Fine (for a limited time)

  • Once an insulin pen is in use, it can usually be kept at room temperature:

    • Temperature: Typically up to 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F)

    • Most pens can be used for 28 to 56 days after opening, depending on the insulin type and brand.

    • Always check the manufacturer's instructions for exact storage duration after opening.
